Conventional wisdom says that if you’re planning on dropping to one knee to pop that oh-so-important question, you better get ready to drop a pretty penny, as well. But just how much should you be expected to pay for the diamond of her dreams (keep in mind, diamonds are a woman’s best friend, and they do last forever)?
Round diamonds are a cut above the rest
Round cut diamonds are by far the most popular engagement ring choice among online shoppers, accounting for a massive 68.4 percent of sales. The princess cut is a distant runner-up at 14.4 percent, and if you’re looking for something a little more original, you might lean toward emerald and marquise diamond cuts. These styles represent 2.8 and 2.4 percent of total engagement ring sales, respectively.
Size isn’t everything
While diamonds come in all shapes and sizes, the median size of an engagement ring diamond purchased online sets right at .75 carats, and the average engagement ring will make you commit $4,191. The most expensive engagement ring found in this data was a round-cut, 2.6 carat diamond. The price tag? A whopping $47,475. That will bring you to your knees!
Round-cut diamonds command the highest price tag
Looking at the price distribution of specific diamond cuts, we see that not only are round-cut diamonds the most popular, they’re also tend to be the most expensive. If you’re looking for a nice round-cut diamond engagement ring for your special someone, be ready to potentially dole out a little more than if you were looking for a less popular oval-cut diamond.
The engagement ring buying mood strikes right in February and December
Assuming you now know what diamond you want, and around how much you’re going to spend, it’s finally time for you to get online and buy the thing. You might be interested to know that December (by a mile) and February are the months with the highest engagement ring sales. It’s clear that when love is in the air, people are more drawn to buying that special ring for that special someone.
